Description

The TILLER LOCK consists of a disc and a lever. It is mounted under the tiller.

Releasing the lock (by pushing the lever to port) immediately releases the tiller and allows the rope to slide freely over the sheave for manual steering. In an emergency or when the device is not needed, the rope can be easily snapped out of the block by pulling down, freeing the tiller.

The new version of the tiller lock retains the robust reliability of the original and brings the design completely up to date.
- New design suitable for any tiller-controlled yacht or sports boat.
- Simple mechanism allows setting and adjustment of tiller - indispensable for sailing with little crew.
- Innovative design with damper that holds course much better than a simply fixed tiller.

Various methods of attaching or locking the tiller have been used over the years, many of which were only adequate. Improvements in performance with short keel and dagger rudders - often with transom attachment - suffer from an unfortunate handicap. With no skeg, no plank, but a sensitive rudder, a boat will lose its elegant balancing act if the helmsman lets go of the tiller. The increased sensitivity and faster response of newer boat designs call for a better system. Such a system would:

1. Ensure accurate locking of the tiller with minimal effort.
2. Be quick and easy to operate when locking and especially when releasing.
3. If possible, it should be possible to release the system directly from the tiller in an emergency.

The TILLER LOCK rope lock is designed to meet these points. The device consists of a disc and lever cam with a toothed slide mounted in a block mounted under the tiller. The cable is attached across the aft part of the cockpit with a means of keeping it under tension. When attached to the cable, the toothed slide prevents the tiller from moving in either direction. Releasing the latch (by turning the lever to port) immediately releases the tiller and allows the cable to slide freely over the sheave for manual steering. In an emergency or when the device is not needed, the cable can be easily snapped out of the block by a downward pull, releasing the tiller.
