Professional windscreen wiper systems since 1939

The Italian SPEICH is the leading brand for high-quality windscreen wiper systems. They design and manufacture products for three different maritime markets. For the professional market, the ‘Naval Line’ developed to operate under the most extreme conditions. A functional product designed for maximum reliability, robustness and ease of use. The ‘Super Yacht Line’ has been developed for the luxury yachting industry. In this market, design is often a distinguishing feature on board, rather than merely a necessary accessory. The products usually consist of bespoke systems finished to an extremely high standard. The ‘Nautical Line’ has been developed for pleasure yachts and consists mainly of nautical applications that are supplied ready to use and are easy to install.

In the Netherlands, the SPEICH Represented by Belship.
We will be happy to advise you on the best solution for your project or fleet.

The experience gained with windscreen wipers for the maritime sector has been applied to the leisure market, with the aim of developing outstanding products for pleasure craft. These applications have different requirements. Often, the windscreen wipers form a distinctive element of the boat’s design rather than merely being an accessory, making the finish of the arms and blades essential. Furthermore, boat designers are increasingly using wide and sloping windows, which require large windscreen wipers to ensure optimum visibility. The windscreen wipers from the SPEICH SuperYacht range meet these requirements, as they are designed to combine the reliability of professional equipment with the aesthetic demands of luxury boats.

Cruise ships, cargo ships, military vessels, research vessels, tankers, tugs and patrol boats have to operate in a wide range of extreme conditions. That is why the robustness and reliability of windscreen wipers are essential for ensuring a clear view from the ship. Furthermore, it is often necessary to coordinate the operation of a significant number of windscreen wiper motors with the windscreen washer system and the windscreen heating. SPEICH windscreen wipers from the Naval range meet these requirements, thanks to their design, which ensures maximum reliability, robustness and ease of use.

Maritime applications often require ready-to-use, easy-to-install products. We have developed a range of marine windscreen wipers, called “SPEICH Nautic”, which are designed to offer a customisable system during installation. The length of the arms, the width of the wiper angle and the desired end position – determined by the wiper motor settings – can be adjusted in simple steps, even after the system has been installed.

Thanks to its outstanding quality, design and installation flexibility, the SPEICH range of marine products is also the best solution for refit and repair vessels.

Since 1959, SPEICH has been manufacturing and designing professional pantograph and oscillating windscreen wipers to ensure the following:

  • High strength and corrosion resistance for all maritime conditions;
  • Compact design of the motor unit for easy installation;
  • A wide range of system configurations.

These windscreen wiper systems consist of a wiper motor, wiper arm and wiper blade. Each component is made to measure for every windscreen and every application. We offer a wide range of standard pantograph and swing-arm windscreen wipers:

SPEICH Clear View screens are a traditional product manufactured with great attention to detail; their design complies with the ISO 3904-1990 standards. They are used on a wide range of vessels, from cargo ships to military vessels. Clear View screens operate on the simple principle that a glass disc, when rotated rapidly, is protected against rain, spray and snow.

The motor is positioned in the centre and attached to the fixed pane to maximise the field of view. The rotating pane is toughened and all metal parts are made of brass. A specially designed spacer between the ring surrounding the rotating glass and the fixed frame prevents water from entering the space between the fixed and rotating glass; this space can optionally be electrically heated to prevent condensation and ice formation, which could impede proper operation. Two ranges of clear screens are available:

  1. AC Clear View screen: is supplied already fitted to toughened glass of the correct shape and thickness for the window in which it is to be installed;
  2. EX Clear View screen:  designed to be fitted into a circular hole milled into the window pane.

SPEICH control systems are used to control windscreen wiper systems and their associated equipment. Each control system has been developed to meet the requirements of every type of installation and can be adapted to different types of motor.

1. Distributed operating systems

  • DCS series : enables the windscreen wiper motors to be controlled via an integrated CAN bus. CAN bus commands can be generated from a control panel, a gateway that can be connected to switches installed by the customer on the console, or directly from the integrated on-board system. The DCS control system allows the windscreen wiper motors, and their auxiliary equipment, to be controlled in groups or individually. The DCS system ensures perfect synchronisation of the windscreen wipers, which operate in the same operating mode. Two different operating modes are available: continuous speed or synchronised variable interval.

2. Centralised control systems

  • UC series:  This allows you to control Z, MEX, SU, PG and PG-EXT.LC type motors, regardless of the supply voltage. You can operate up to 10 windscreen wiper motors in a single group or individually using a customisable control panel. Two different operating modes are available: continuous speed or synchronised intermittent. The UC system also enables the control of various auxiliary devices, such as solenoid valves or windscreen washer pumps, solenoid valves for vent air, windscreen wiper heating elements and heated windows.
  • PWS series:  This allows you to control Z, MEX, S, PG and PG-EXT.LC type motors using a low supply voltage (12/24 Vdc). You can control up to 5 windscreen wiper motors in a single group or individually via a dedicated control panel and manage the windscreen wiper system. Two different operating modes are available: continuous speed or synchronised intermittent speed.
  • LMS series : this allows you to operate a group of 3 to 9 motor units using a low supply voltage (12/24 Vdc) and control the washing system;
  • CT series : extremely compact, similar to a toggle switch, enables the control of one or two E- and Z-type motor units with low supply voltages (12/24 Vdc) and the associated washing system;
  • ESB switch : ON-ON-ON switch suitable for controlling type E and L two-speed motors with limit switches and low supply voltages (12/24 Vdc).

For configurations featuring a large number of windscreen wiper motors or heated windows and windscreen wipers, we design and manufacture special power distribution units  (PDUs) .

ON-ON-ON switch, ESB switch

The ESB toggle switch with three ON positions is suitable for controlling two-speed windscreen wiper motors that do not require dynamic parking.

Modular control system, LMS Series

The LMS control system has been developed for windscreen wiper motors with two speeds and a voltage of 12 V to 24 Vdc. The movement of the wiper arms is synchronised in all operating modes. Synchronisation is achieved by bringing the motors that reach the park position first to a imperceptible stop. There are two versions of the LMS control system, depending on the number of windscreen wiper motors to be controlled:

  • LMS.02, for powering two windscreen wipers and one auxiliary unit;
  • The modular LMS system controls between 3 and 9 windscreen wipers and one auxiliary unit.

Multifunctional switch, CT series. The CT control unit is a compact control system for operating one or two windscreen wiper motors. This system is suitable for low-voltage windscreen wiper motors, for both single and dual speeds. The various models differ in the number of windscreen wipers they control and their power output.

Relay-controlled controller, UC Series

UC control systems are designed to control traditional pantograph, swing-arm and horizontal windscreen wiper systems. The UC system can also control auxiliary devices for the windscreen wiper system, such as the windscreen washer system, the compressed air flushing system, the windscreen heater and the wiper blade heaters. In addition, it can integrate the control of other devices, such as visibility enhancement systems. Various versions of the UC control system are available, depending on the number of windscreen wipers they can control.

Relay-controlled controller, PWS series

The PWS control system is designed to control windscreen wiper motors with one (PWS.1V) or two (PWS.2V) speeds and a supply voltage of 12 to 30 Vdc. It consists of a control unit and a soft-touch panel that communicates via a CAN bus. PWS has the following features:

The pump or solenoid valves for activating the windscreen washer fluid.

Synchronisation of the windscreen wiper arms’ movement by coming to a seamless halt when the motor first reaches the park position;

Precisely positioned in the parking position thanks to the dynamic braking action of the control unit on the motors;

Overload protection using automatic fuses (PTC);

If necessary, a second panel can be connected to the control unit;

Advanced distributed control system, DCS series

The Distributed Control System (DCS) is a control system for SPEICH windscreen wiper systems. It consists of a network of microcontrollers, integrated into each motor, which communicate via a CAN bus network.
The DCS control system comprises:

  • Motor control unit (up to 96), fitted directly onto the windscreen wiper motor (types Z, S and P) or in a specially designated compartment (types PG-EXT, PG.3F);
  • Auxiliary equipment control unit (up to 12), capable of controlling up to 4 pieces of auxiliary equipment;
  • The control panel is available with traditional switches and/or a touchscreen. Operation is possible via the built-in PLC, with or without the SPEICH control panel.

The DCS system guarantees:

To control one or more auxiliary devices (water/air solenoid valves, windows and heated arms) via the DCS.AUX4 control unit, which is equipped with a CAN bus communication system.

Perfect synchronisation of the windscreen wipers under all operating conditions, in both continuous and intermittent modes. Synchronisation takes place even when the windscreen wipers are of different sizes and have different wiper angles.

Windscreen wiper group management. Each windscreen wiper can be assigned an operating mode independently of the others;

Simple and clear wiring, with all system components connected in a daisy chain;

High flexibility, allowing you to vary the composition of the groups, change the positions of the limit switches and add components to the system (control panels, windscreen wiper motors and auxiliary motors), even after installation has been completed;

Figure 1:  Typical window shapes and possible coverings using anti-glare screens are shown.

Figure 2:  shows an example of a few steps involved in fitting a trapezium-shaped window. Depending on the size of the window, the cassette containing the film-winding mechanism can be one of three types:

Model 069: maximum window dimensions (bottom x height) 3600 x 3000 mm

Model 027: maximum window dimensions (bottom x height) 1800 x 1500 mm

Model 058: maximum window dimensions (bottom x height) 2500 x 2500 mm

There are two different ways of installing the film collection tray.  You can choose between wall or ceiling mounting; the necessary brackets are available on request. Installation in sloping windows is also possible using special brackets.

The shading factor defines the amount of solar energy that is transmitted from outside to inside through a shaded window, often in the form of secondary radiation. The lower the value, the more effective the sunshade’s reflection; the higher the value, the more heat the film absorbs, making adequate ventilation necessary for optimal performance. The key energy characteristics of each proposed film type were measured using the ASHRAE method with 4-millimetre-thick glass.

The cassettes, made from anodised or powder-coated aluminium, are used to house the rolled-up film. They therefore serve a protective function, in addition to providing the mechanical properties required for the retraction mechanism to operate correctly. The awnings can be adapted to different window sizes and, in order to cater for the full range of sizes offered to customers, three different cassette models are produced, as shown below.

Cable-guided motion (MA code) : an anti-glare screen guided by steel cables and moved by gravity thanks to the weight of its lower section. The height of the film is adjusted by pulling on a cord supplied with the product. The guide cables can be fitted either vertically or at an angle. Recommended for medium-sized to small windows (max. width 1.5 m, max. height 1 m).

Belt drive (code MN) : Anti-reflective screen with a film that is guided and moved by a belt kept taut by the spring-loaded film return roller. The belt is wound up in a special housing. The housing has a capacity for sliding movements of up to 1.80 m.

With cord operation (MC code) : Anti-glare screen with a fabric panel guided and operated by a cord held taut by a spring-loaded roller. The cord is pulled up manually and hooked onto a special hook. This system allows for a maximum screen height of 3.5 m.
